That dreaded day, accuser after accuser took the witness stand to give their testimonies against Love, while Love silently looked on; undaunted by many who blamed Love for their loss and pain, and sought for justice. "Love must be made to pay for all the pain I've gone through" they vowed……

Dear readers, the intention of this article is to only focus on what Loves' accusers charge, and how Love responded to those allegations.

The following is a summary of just two (2) of those accusations, and love's defense to them.

 The first accuser to take the witness stand was: Hurt

"Hurt, I am not the reason why you were brokenhearted. It was your lack of knowledge, understanding and experience about relationships, which brought you your own pain – Not me."

"If you are honest with me, I'm sure you will agree that you didn't listen to my counsel when I tried to warn you, or sent others to instruct you…..that you were making a mistake by forming a romantic relationship with the guy you claimed I chose for you, but you didn't take my warnings."

"You allowed your feelings to dictate your decisions. And now you have received a broken heart, you blame me for your position?"

"Hurt, it's time to take responsibility for your own actions, and stop blaming Love for your poor decisions."

"It's your lack of knowledge and experience about relationships that caused you pain – Not me. Because you failed to practice the basic tenets of Love, you paid with a broken heart. I did not send a broken heart. My rules actually protect you from experiencing a broken heart."

 'Hurt' left the stand to allow Love's next accuser: Low Self Esteem, to testify.

And as Low Self Esteem took the stand, he shouted, "Love you have your favorites. You only show favor to a selected few!"

"Because I'm ugly, and have an average paying job you disliked me, and honored prestigious individuals, instead. How can you say, you're impartial, when it's clear you only choose the pretty/handsome and upper class?"

"Love you're not for me. So I won't waste my time on you - To hell with you!"

Friends, Love's response to Low Self Esteem stormy outbursts was typical of Love's character.

"Low Self Esteem, my favors are for all. I am not a respecter of persons. It's your wrong beliefs about me, which have given you the life you now live. You will only have what you believe. If you believe that I am only favorable to the good-looking and upper class, then you will not give me a chance to prove myself, or allow me to freely share my gifts with you."

"Remember, you are God's creation, and everything He made was good. How can you then call yourself ugly, when He sees you as the apple of His eyes?"

"And how can you say that Love is only favorable to the upper class? If you had really known me, you would have known that Love cannot be bought. She always gives herself freely to others, expecting nothing in return. If someone showed up at your door, and said they know me, but is subtly concerned about how much money you possess, or are working for – They don't know me. Because I am not about Money, my aim is the heart of individuals…….."

Friends, I have to close this article on this note, but the short and long of it is: Love was proven: 'Not guilty'. The book is Love & Respect: the love she most desires and the respect he desperately needs. The essence of that comes from Ephesians 5:33 which is the most significant treatise in the New Testament, most would conclude, on marriage. We might say Jim, it's God's last word to the church.

It's as if my grandfather was dying and he was on his death bed, cognizant, but ailing. And he said, "Emerson, come close I have something I need to tell you; come close please. As he looks around, I lean forward and he whispers something into my ears.
Well you know Jim, whatever my grandfather has to say at that moment is going to be the most important words he'll ever say to me. The words come deep from his soul and he intends for them to go deep into my soul. Well, it's as if God has spoken his last word to the church.

Most would conclude that the climax to marriage is Ephesians 5:33. It is as though the Lord is saying, "Lean close church, listen to me. And if you listen everything will be okay."

There, the apostle Paul says, "Husbands, love your wives and wives respect your husbands." And that in my view is the essence of what God intends marriage to be.

In some ways that resonates with you as you read the title, and it resonates with a lot of people; you know, that seems to capture it. It seems to communicate the foundational dynamic between all people, but in this case, definitely between men and women.

Emerson, how was the Love & Respect concept revealed to you?

I was a senior pastor for twenty years at a church in East Lansing. I had a teaching-preaching ministry there, and while meditating on Ephesians 5:33 one day I realized a husband is commanded to love his wife. Now we knew that and preached that in the church, but I thought, why is it that God commands the husband to love? Well, duh, she needs love like she needs air to breathe.

And so, the message became more relevant to you.

Exactly. I liken that to her wearing an air tank connected to an air hose, and she needs to breathe in that love as she does air. If he walks in and stands on her air hose, she will flat line on the emotional heart monitor. She'll scream, "Get off my air hose!" If he doesn't get her message she'll scream harder and hit him upside the head. Now he's standing there bleeding with a headache thinking, what in the world just hit me? [laughs]

There was this need she had to feel loved for who she is apart from her performance. But as I got into the second part of the verse I realized, wives are commanded to respect their husbands. Apparently he needs to feel respected for who he is, and maybe even apart from his performance. Maybe as she needs to be loved unconditionally, he needs to be respected unconditionally.

And I cross-referenced to Peter who precisely says that (in 1Peter 3:1-2) about wives who were married to disobedient husbands. He says you can win this disobedient husband through your respectful behavior. And there it was again, that same Greek word. I thought whoa, that's unconditional respect because the guy doesn't deserve respect — I suddenly saw, unconditional love and unconditional respect and I realized apparently this husband needs something from his wife that only she can give him. In fact what I realized is this: No husband feels fond feelings of love and affection in his heart toward a wife he thinks despises him. That's important.

Here's what is so exciting Jim. When a wife feels unloved she tends to negatively react in a way that's hugely disrespectful to her husband — and she doesn't see that part of it.

And when a husband feels disrespected, he negatively reacts in a way that seems hugely unloving to his wife — and he doesn't see it. She's crying out for love, but comes across disrespectfully. He's crying out for respect, but he comes across unloving. And thus was born what I call the Crazy Cycle: without love, she reacts without respect. Without respect, he reacts without love.

Practically speaking, how should a husband love his wife?

We made it easy in the book with the simple acronym C.O.U.P. L. E.

For example, a husband is to be Close to his wife, seeking to be face-to-face with her, to talk with her. It's in a woman's nature to look eye-to-eye. That will never be natural to a man; we look away during conflict because we don't want to be more provoked. It takes real guts to look at her and say, "I'm sorry, will you forgive me?", and when we do she softens and the rage stops. We talk more about this in the book.

What would be some first steps in implementing these concepts?

People say, well who's going to move first? And we say, the one who sees himself or herself as the most mature [laughs]. So it's a matter of us trusting that this is God's word and trusting as I act on this information, the Lord will honor me.

If a wife says, "Well I'm not showing him respect because he doesn't deserve it, he hasn't earned it; he's not superior to me..." I understand those sentiments, but the question becomes, what's the alternative? Do you actually think if you show him disrespect it will motivate him to be loving? That's comparable to him saying, "I'm not loving that woman until she shows me more respect!"

Someone has to break that cycle, and it's the mature one who can do that.

And Then There Were Two

For the past fifteen years, on February 14th, I have served up a dinner of pink creamed potatoes, heart-shaped hamburgers, heart-shaped biscuits, red-velvet cupcakes with white icing, and pink lemonade. Red Mylar balloons danced from the kitchen chairs and dinner was served on Valentine plates with red napkins. Of course, the entire meal was sprinkled with lots of love.

But something happened in 2003 that caused a shift in this Jaynes family tradition. My son, Steven, went away to college. Somehow, pink tinted creamed potatoes and heart-shaped hamburgers didn’t hold the same magic, and twenty-four cupcakes seemed a bit much for just the two of us. As the day approached, Steve and I made a decision to start a new tradition – a romantic dinner out.

Because Valentines Day fell of a Friday last year, Steve and I decided to celebrate on Thursday to avoid the crowds. I can safely say we avoided the crowds. When we arrived at the candle lit cozy restaurant, we were the only two customers there. Empty nest…empty house…empty restaurant.

“Boy, you know how to make a girl feel special,” I teased Steve. “You reserved the entire restaurant for me.”
Of course it was only a fluke, but then again, I think God was giving us a special Valentines gift of our own. Throughout the entire evening, we had to place to ourselves. For several hours, waiters and waitresses gave their entire attention to one couple adjusting to a meal without pick creamed potatoes and red velvet cupcakes. Steve and I held hands over a white table cloth, looked into each other’s eyes, and talked without worrying the people at the next table would hear. Steve said a longer than usual blessing – and we had a great time.

Thinking back on our first Valentines Day as empty nesters, I am so grateful for our relationship. Sure, I missed the Valentines Day hubbub around my house, but we still had the day sprinkled with love. Through my ministry with women, I see so many couples who are investing most of their time in their children. Schedules revolve around soccer practice, ballgames, and school activities. Romance is placed on the back burner and the marriage relationship is placed on hold for a more convenient time. Then one day, when the kids are gone, the couple glances up from the cereal bowl one morning and says, “Who are you?”

I’ve noticed an unfortunate shift in our culture over recent years. Fifty years ago, during the time of June Cleaver and Father Knows Best, a woman who did not work outside the home was called a “housewife.” But now that same woman is called a “stay-at-home mom.” That sounds like positive transition to some. After all, who wants to be married to their house? But, I think it is a sad commentary on the importance of marriage in our society. It shows that our focus has gone from the marriage unit being the focal point of the family to the children as being the core. When that is the case, what happens when the children grow up and have lives of their own?

Don’t get me wrong. I love being a mother – Being a Great Mom was my first published book. Motherhood is one of the most important roles we will ever fill. We have the responsibility of shaping and molding the children who will one day define who we are as a community and a nation. However, as a wife, my first priority must always be to love, honor and cherish my husband – putting my relationship with Steve second only to my relationship with God. That is the best gift I can give my child!

When I was a child, my parents didn’t get along very well. I can still remember how I longed to have parents that loved each other, who hugged and kissed in front of me, and who enjoyed each other’s company. Instead, their rocky relationship left me feeling our home was on shaky ground never quite sure of my footing.

Don’t wait until the kids are gone to try and catch up for the missed years. Make each day count. Right now, your marriage is becoming what it is going to be.

Yes, Valentines Day was different last year. No pink potatoes or heart shaped hamburgers. Instead we enjoyed a main course of special memories, a side of future hopes and dreams, and a rich dessert of intimate moments topped with a promise of more to come. And then there were two.

Ah, you can have some departures from the rule, in which something of miraculous product, but that is on each-now-and-then bases it. But to equalize us then will be able to never travel to a life different from the world and experiment in the manners which exist in the fiction. However, the true stories of love have a magic of their clean. The truth and experiments that we all the share in this world will always carry a greater weight with us. To connect itself to a true person that tested similar tests cannot be replaced by the fiction. Curiosity can lead us to read a true story but it is inspiration and intrigue which keeps us there. Knowing somebody outside there--true somebody passed by something which we personally tested is powerful. Truths, we can be able to compose a kind of false reality with the romantic fiction, but it cannot replace the substance of the truth. This true connection. The true stories of love have their own individual quality. They draw us inside, because really… what could be more attractive than reading a true tale about the love compensated by the circumstance of reality? Us all soaps that there is no guarantee in the life. If we will be occupied good or bad hand in the love is dubious. We do not know the chance, or what will be the results in some our lives at the end or during our own personal adventure by the life. If the end is good or bad, we are intrigued by fortunes and misfortunes of reality, because the life really imitates art.

I mean no one, especially me, wants to be the inconsiderate oaf who fails to do something on Valentine's Day!

As men, we are so compartmental in our thinking (that is a nice way to excuse insensitivity) that the only time we think of demonstrating our affection, appreciation, and commitment is on Valentine's Day or when we are trying to get something. Throughout the years o four marriage, Jan has periodically reminded me that I never send her flowers, candy, or a card to tell her that I love her. In the back of my mind, I always respond, "What about last Valentine's Day?" I have been working to overcome this insensitivity, which really does not reflect the love, affection, and appreciation I have for my beautiful wife. I think I am making progress, but as Jan would attest, I definitely have not arrived.

Later, the typical high school girl will spend much more time daydreaming about marriage than will her masculine counterpart. He will think about sex, to be sure, but she will be glassy-eyed over love. She will buy and read the romantic pulp magazines ... not he! Thus, males and females come to marriage with a lifelong difference in outlook and expectation.

Why, then, are men so uninformed of this common aspect of feminine nature? They haven't been told. For centuries, women have been admonished to meet their husbands' sexual needs–or else. Every female alive knows that the masculine appetite for sex demands gratification, one way or the other. But a woman's need for emotional fulfillment is just as pressing and urgent as the physiological requirement for sexual release in the male. Both can be stymied, but at an enormous cost! And as such, it is as unfortunate for a man to ignore his wife's need for romantic love as it is for her to foreclose on his sexual appetite.

For the benefit of my masculine readers, let me restate my message more directly: Your wife is probably more vulnerable to your warmth and kindness than you have realized heretofore. Nothing builds her esteem more effectively than for you to let her (and others) know that you respect and value her as a person. And nothing destroys her self-confidence more quickly than your ridicule or rejection. If you doubt this fact, I urge you to conduct a simple experiment. At the breakfast table tomorrow morning, spontaneously tell your children how fortunate they are to have the mother whom God has given them. Without speaking directly to her, tell them how hard she works to keep them clean and well fed, and then mention how much you appreciate and love her.

Just drop these words casually into the middle of your conversation while she is scrambling the eggs. Her reaction will give you valuable insight into her emotional state. If she goes into shock and burns the eggs, then it has definitely been too long since you gave her an unsolicited compliment. If she flashes a mischievous smile and suggests that you miss the 8:05 train this once, you'll then know how to cure the headaches she's been having at bedtime each evening. But if she fails to notice your comments, you must recognize that she is in critical condition and can only be resuscitated by taking her on a weekend trip to a nearby resort, at which time you will have flowers, candy and a love letter waiting in the selected motel.

5 Things that Really Bug Me About My Husband

I’m not going to waste your time telling you how unfair it is that my husband wakes up in the morning looking just like he did when he went to bed the night before, while on the other hand, my first-morning appearance could land a role on a sci-fi horror flick. Nor am I going to complain about how irritating it is when we go camping and he gets to stand up while I have to squat down with the chiggers and mosquitoes. That would all be far too trivial. There are much more important grievances that I have against this man, with whom I’ve been living now for seven years!

For starters, I’ve noticed that he’s much more forgiving than I am. Why is that a problem, you ask? Let me tell you. We get in a typical marriage spat—usually over some dilemma where I didn’t get my way—and not two minutes later, he’s over it, all smiles, and ready to be friends. Me? I’m not even to “cool down” mode for another hour or two. Wearing a scowl I try to find my own corner to lick my wounds while he runs around wearing that infuriating boyish grin, eager as a panting puppy begging for a pat on the head (in his case, a hug or kiss). Argh!

Have you begun to feel my pain yet? Wait, there’s more. I’ve also noticed he’s more teachable than me. This wouldn’t ordinarily be a problem with say, my pastor, but it’s awfully convicting living with someone who is willing to take criticism more readily and then actually do something about it. When that happens, I feel like I have to be willing to change too, a very painful daily challenge indeed.

Just when I thought I was being stretched beyond my limit, the bar went higher. I discovered that he’s more humble than me. Yes, he will say those two little magic words almost immediately when he’s wrong or hurts me. Most women would give up a shopping spree to hear their husbands say that. For me, it’s like trying to enjoy a toothache because I’m not ready to admit I’m wrong yet, even though I usually am. He seems to find great enjoyment in saying he’s sorry first and then waiting for me to do the same—like a game. This is indeed a cruel life I’m living.

And about being wrong, over the last seven years I’ve noticed that my husband hardly ever is. At first, I thought he just had a bad case of MAS (male answer syndrome). I mean, everything we talk about he seems to know why and how. When it comes to weather, geography, politics, history, entertainment, nature…who needs “Ask Jeeves?” I have my own personal information super-highway (A.K.A. human computer) living under the same roof. He seems to soak up all the details I could ever need to know, but none of the ones I ask him to remember (oops, I guess he does have a flaw).

There was that once he was wrong, though. We were on a day hike in the rugged mountains of Wyoming when a mosquito landed on my arm.

“Hmm…this mosquito isn’t biting me,” I observed. Like who sits and waits to see if a mosquito is going to bite or not?

“It must be a male,” my hubby pipes in.

“What do you mean?” I ask.

“C’mon…everyone knows that only female mosquitoes bite.”

“Everyone!?” I was clearly annoyed at his condescending blanket statement. “I’ve never heard that before and I think you’re wrong. I don’t think everyone knows everything like you do.”

It was then that the mission became personal. The quest began. Even if he was right about the stupid female-only blood-sucker, I was going to prove him wrong for once about “everyone” knowing this little piece of trivia. For the next four hours, every single person we met on the hiking trail—mountain-type people (we call them “granola bars” in Wyoming) who should know these kinds of things—got the big interview.

“Excuse me, do you know if only male or female mosquitoes bite?” People stopped, knitted their eyebrows, and looked moderately intrigued. I could tell they were glad to help out any way they could. Maybe it was the desperation they perceived in my voice.

“Uh, no, I have no idea.”

“YES! Thank you!” I cockily celebrated my victory with a little animated trail dance, my squeals echoing off the canyon walls. “Oh yeah, oh yeah, baby!” Meanwhile, the curious hiker would then give my husband an apologetic look before traveling on, head shaking in sympathy. By the end of the day, and thirty-some hikers later, my point was made. Only one hiker out of all the ones we encountered knew the correct answer, and he just so happened to be an entomologist (a fancy term for bug guy). If I didn’t know any better, I’d say I really “bugged” my husband back that day!

The last thing that really gets to me is how my husband expects a lot out of me. He insists that I take responsibility for my actions, and own up to my mistakes. That isn’t what I agreed to when I said, “I do.” But still, he is persistent that I become a woman of character.

Like the time I told a little white lie to the lady at the hardware store. I didn’t mean to…she put me on the spot and I just blurted the first thing that helped me look and feel better about myself. But it was still a lie.
My conscience was bothered all the way home. I hadn’t done something like that in a long time. As I sat down in the kitchen, I called my husband at work to admit what I had done. Perhaps my conscience would be relieved if I told someone the truth. I regretted the decision it as soon as I got the words out.

“Well, you know what you have to do now,” he prodded.

“What?” The color began to drain from my face. This wasn’t what I meant to happen. No, please, not that…

“You have to call her and tell her that you lied to her.”

“Dang! Really?”

“Absolutely. You’ll never get it off your conscience until you do. Isn’t it easier to just face it and be free before God? It’s never worth it to hide your sin because it doesn’t go away—it just gets bigger.”

Ouch. I knew he was right. Why did he have to be so wise, too? I quickly picked up the phone while I had the courage and dialed the number for the hardware store. When I explained to the woman how I had lied to her, and that it wasn’t the kind of person I wanted to be and I was really sorry, her comment surprised me.

“Oh, I knew you were lying to me, and I appreciate the fact that you called.”

Just think, if I hadn’t gone to her, my small-town reputation would have received a black check mark and it could have had far-reaching effects on my personal life and ministry. But because my husband made me call, a potentially bad situation was turned around.

So now you know what things really bug me about my husband. I guess it’s because, like Brussels sprouts, he’s good for me, and things that are good for me don’t always taste so good at the time. But he truly cares about me and my character, and he is always setting the example for me to become more like Christ. I guess I won’t complain anymore for now…until it’s time to go camping again.

The Power of Believing in your Spouse

One of the greatest gifts you can give your mate is to believe in his or her dreams. As the pressures of life intensify, sometimes the difference between going after a dream and remaining passive is having someone say, "I believe in you!" If this is your desire, I encourage you to answer two important questions.

1. What are your mate's dreams? The first step is to learn what your spouse is dreaming about. What specific things motivate him in life? What does she want to accomplish in her lifetime? During a road trip, Erin and I made a list of all the things we wanted to complete before we die. As Erin talked, I was amazed at the diversity of her dreams. I had no idea she even dreamt about some of those things. Understanding your mate's goals is a great way to deepen your intimacy.

2. What stands in his or her way? After hearing about your mate's dreams, it's important to determine what might inhibit realizing those goals. Is it a lack of confidence? Maybe she doesn't know where to begin? Whatever the reason, I encourage you to find out and assist him or her to overcome those barriers.

As I discovered while running the marathon, when someone believes in you there's no limit to what can be accomplished. However, a goal is only a dream until someone makes it a reality. And that reality sometimes begins with a simple word of encouragement. What a difference you can make if you always treat your mate not as he might be at that moment, but as you know he can be.

I Believe in You

“I've hit the wall!" that was my first thought when I felt an intense tingling throughout my body. "This can't be happening now!" I pleaded with myself, "I still have eight miles to go!" But with each step, my body engaged in a war with my mind. On one side of the battle was that I had dreamed and trained for six months to complete a marathon. On the other side, however, was my body. At the eighteen mile marker I began to experience severe cramping in my calves.

My wife, Erin, found me at the next mile marker. Expecting to see me running along joyously, her first thought was that I was injured. After explaining my dilemma, all I could think about was quitting. In my mind, if I had to walk the remaining distance, my dream of "running" a marathon was over. As I struggled with each step, Erin said something I'll never forget. "I believe in you!"
Looking back on the experience, Erin's encouragement seemed so simple. "I believe in you." I've heard her use those words many times before. But at that moment, during a time in which I felt so defeated, her words were like a burst of energy.

The rest of the race looked like a scene out of a Rocky movie. With each agonizing step, Erin was by my side. Some friends and family who were watching even joined in the long walk. However, as we reached the twenty-fourth mile, I couldn't endure walking any longer. If I was going to finish the race, I had to start running. After several yards, my calves began functioning again and I was able to jog. Finally, after 26.6 long miles, Erin and I crossed the finish line together. She believed in me.

Tachyons have never been found in experiments as real particles traveling through the vacuum, but we predict theoretically that tachyon-like objects exist as faster-than-light 'quasiparticles' moving through laser-like media. (That is, they exist as particle-like excitations, similar to other quasiparticles called phonons and polaritons that are found in solids. 'Laser-like media' is a technical term referring to those media that have inverted atomic populations, the conditions prevailing inside a laser.)

"We are beginning an experiment at Berkeley to detect tachyon-like quasiparticles. There are strong scientific reasons to believe that such quasiparticles really exist, because Maxwell's equations, when coupled to inverted atomic media, lead inexorably to tachyon-like solutions."Quantum optical effects can produce a different kind of 'faster than light' effect (see "Faster than light?" by R. What Makes for a Happy Marriage?

People have different ideas about what makes a happy marriage. But, for many, the question is one they have not asked themselves. Or at least if they have, they don’t have a definitive answer in mind. So I think it’s worthwhile to look at how other people define a happy marriage.
Judith Wallerstein and Sandra Blakeslee undertook the task of interviewing successful couples across America to find out how people define a happy marriage. They report their results in a wonderful book called The Good Marriage. Here are the types of things they found that go into the making of a happy marriage:

1.Respect between the partners
2.Each person cherishes the other
3.Each person likes the other
4.Each finds pleasure and comfort in the other’s company
5.Emotional support of each other
6.Mutually satisfying physical intimacy
7.Expression of appreciation between the partners
8.The creation of fond memories
9.A feeling of safety, friendship, and trust
10.A feeling that the spouse is central to his or her world
11.An admiration of positive qualities such as honesty, generosity, decency, loyalty, and fairness
12.A strong sense of morality
13.The conviction that each person is worthy of being loved
14.A sense of reality, in that there are some problems but that they are surmountable
15.A view that each partner is special in some important regard
16.A sense that the marriage enhances each partner
17.The sense that there’s a unique fit between each partner’s needs and the spouse’s willingness and ability to meet those needs
18.The sense that each partner is lucky to have the other
19.An equitable division of household tasks and childrearing
20.A sense that the success of the marriage is attributable to both partners
21.An ability to express both positive and negative emotions
22.A shared view that the marriage takes constant attention and work

This is quite a list, isn’t it? Surely any couple that has these things has a wonderful, blessed marriage!
However, it’s important to note that such a marriage doesn’t come about by accident. It takes years of dedicated work to bring this kind of relationship into existence. The good news is that it’s certainly doable; in fact, millions of couples have just this kind of relationship. It does, though, take a major commitment on both parts to continually work on the marriage.
While I say that it takes a commitment from both people, please recognize that at any point in time the task of keeping the relationship together may fall more to one person than the other. At the time, it may seem unfair. But that’s the way relationships are.
Sometimes one of the partners goes through a period of intense personal challenge, severely hampering his ability to contribute to the marriage. During these times, if the marriage is to survive, it’s up to the other partner to keep the relationship together.
These are dangerous times in a relationship, dangerous in the sense that one person can come to feel so overburdened that she decides to end the relationship. Even the person facing personal challenges may decide he would be better off if the marriage ended. Some even come to believe the partner is the cause of the problems.
If marriages are to survive long enough to cultivate the wonderful characteristics listed earlier in this chapter, then both partners must agree to stick with the marriage until challenges can be met and overcome. Also in these times of great strife, the one factor that may save a marriage from dissolution is active participation in a faith community. Doing so cannot only provide avenues of encouragement for the couple to stay together but can provide the sustaining power of prayers from the faith community.

I think it prudent here to add a note of warning. In times of strife, couples often quit going to church, cut themselves off from their faith community, and cease all activities that are necessary to sustain their faith in God. Often this happens out of shame and sometimes out of depression. Whatever the reason for doing so, nothing could be worse. Having faith and a supporting faith community can make the difference between being able to keep a marriage together during times of trouble and ending up in divorce court. While it may take energy and courage that seemingly is unavailable in times where stress has used up all available resources, digging down deep to sustain your faith will, in the end, pay off hundredfold.

And the payoff comes in the long run, when surviving the rough times eventually strengthens the marriage and your faith. In a way, it’s like a bone that breaks. When it heals, the fracture becomes the strongest part of the bone. So too, can a marriage survive difficult times. Once overcome, the problems may well become a source of strength to the marriage and to your faith.
In sum, your marriage can become one of great satisfaction and enduring love. But it will take lots of work and a commitment to staying in the marriage even through the rough times.
